Audience Research - initial research

Indie Pop target audience

The genre is mainly an audience aged 16 to 25 who consume the music through streaming apps such as Spotify and Apple Music, and discover it through social networking advertisements and the media e.g. TV adverts and adverts/promotion on music apps.
Indie pop originates from indie rock and 1960's girl-group pop, however the gender is balanced between a male and female audience. The type of people are likely to be creative and stand out from the crowd. The audience are highly likely to listen to indie/pop songs for the music and not the artist, and so the video's are quite basic and low budget, however they can be interesting or quirky at times.
52% of people who watch pop music videos are females and the age group who use Youtube most is 25-34 year olds, I will bare this in mind when targeting my video to the audience.

Industrial context - Research for Beggars

Beggars Group is a London-headquartered independent label group.

The Beggars Group has been in business for over forty years and is owned and managed by Martin Mills. Their musical focus remains fiercely alternative. As of 2017, the main labels that form the group are 4AD, Matador Records, Rough Trade Records, XL Recordings and Young. The company owns 4AD (the label itself a Beggars Banquet imprint) outright, and retains a 50% stake in each of the others. With its own worldwide network in place, unique in the independent sector, the Group now has three offices in London (two of which also house recording studios), two in the US (New York and Los Angeles), and a dedicated office in every major territory.

The company, which also runs an office in New York, continues to be run by its co-founder, Martin Mills, who originally established the company in 1977.

Its biggest artist successes have included Adele and The Prodigy (via XL), as well as Queens Of The Stone Age (via Matador) and The XX (via Young Turks).

FINANCIAL RESULTS

According to filings with UK Companies House, Beggars Group generated £63.1m ($83.4m) in total turnover in 2019.

That was down by £11.1m on the £74.2m Beggars generated in the prior year.

Its operating profit in 2019 stood at £3.7m ($4.9m) in 2019, down from £11.95m in 2018

Thoughts on NEA

I’ve been thinking for my NEA that I will be doing a music video, I was hesitant at first, as I’ve never done media before. However, I was really drawn to the brief that we were given for the music video and that a narrative video would be really interesting to create and I think it will challenge me skill fully.
